Welcome Back!

Welcome to a new and exciting school year at Lochearn Elementary!

This September 1st marks Lochearn’s 50th anniversary. Lochearn School has had an amazing history of learning in an environment that has promoted excellence in learning together. Here at Lochearn, our parents, students, teachers and support staff form a learning community that values a safe and exciting environment.

This new school year will see more technology and 21st century learning skills incorporated into our daily teaching. It will definitely be a time of excitement and change.

As part of our 21st century vision, we have decided to move our school website to a blog. A blog is an interactive website that allows visitors to leave comments.

Why would we move our website to a blog?

1. Social Relevancy – Our students are growing up in a digital world where they are immersed in technology. The internet has changed so drastically over the last few years and has evolved from what was called "Web 1.0," to what it is now being referred to as "Web 2.0." The internet used to be a place where we would go to find information (Web 1.0), but it is now a place where we can collaborate to share knowledge, and create and re-create information (Web 2.0). We need to ensure that our students have the necessary skills to use technology safely and effectively.

2. Engage in 21st Century Skills- Three important skills that students engage in are collaboration, inquiry and critical thinking. This blog is another place where students can investigate and use their critical thinking skills as they collaborate and share their knowledge.

3. Share Knowledge- Students, parents and teachers can all collaborate and share their knowledge through the interactivity of the blog. We encourage our school community to share on the blog by posting comments.

4. Responsible Citizenship- As part of being a responsible citizen, students are also learning about responsible digital citizenship. Students are learning that the internet is a place where we act in safe and caring ways, just as we do throughout our school. As a school community, we can begin this journey, of teaching our students about their rights and responsibilities online and work together to prepare our children to become global digital citizens.

5. Love of Learning- As lifelong learners, we will grow and learn about the world that our students, “digital citizens,” are growing up in. This is another opportunity for learning and to care for our students.

I’m confident that our staff at Lochearn School will support and enrich your child’s learning journey. We believe that teaching a child to learn, to love learning, and to feel successful are the most worthwhile of all endeavors.

Thank-you for being a part of the Lochearn School Community.
